Eiji Aonuma has revisited one of Ocarina of Time’s most debated dungeons for the game’s Switch 2 remake. In a recent Ask the Developer interview, the series producer said he wanted to address the Water Temple, which he designed 28 years ago, and had the team make adjustments for the new version.
Director HokWai Ng said item switching is now easier, with the controls mapped to the D-pad. The remake also changes some of the dungeon’s walls to lattice-style structures, allowing players to see into nearby rooms and better understand the layout.
Aonuma also explained that his original goal was to make being underwater enjoyable. He wanted players to experience how sounds and surroundings feel different beneath the surface, drawing on his own interest in freediving.
The 3DS version had already introduced Water Temple changes, including a touchscreen shortcut for the Iron Boots and directional lines pointing toward water-level switches. The Switch 2 remake adds further revisions to the dungeon’s controls and structure.
