Final Fantasy Resonance began as a proposal to expand the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius into a dedicated turn-based RPG for consoles. Producer Keisuke Nakashima developed the pitch at the end of 2020, envisioning a complete gameplay experience without the original title’s mobile gacha mechanics.

According to Nakashima, some Square Enix executives initially resisted the proposal. They preferred a straightforward port, which would have cost less and required a shorter development period. Nakashima rejected that direction, saying he wanted to create an original console version rather than simply transfer the mobile game.

Final Fantasy Resonance subsequently developed beyond its Brave Exvius foundations, including the use of an HD-2D visual style. Nakashima also said that conversations during a global press tour for Brave Exvius influenced the project. While some people showed interest in the game, they were put off by its gambling-style mechanics.

Nakashima described that response as disappointing and said it became another reason to bring the experience to consoles, where it could reach a wider audience without those gacha elements.

Final Fantasy Resonance is now available worldwide on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.
