Pokémon Go is updating the Exploration Device with features designed to make it more useful during active gameplay. The device will continue attempting to catch Pokémon and spin PokéStop Photo Discs while the game is not open, but it can now also assist players while they are actively exploring with Pokémon GO running.

Trainers must be at least level 20 to activate the feature. The Exploration Device can be accessed through its icon in the upper-right corner of the map or through the Key Items section of the Bag. When it is active, a pink Poké Ball icon will appear above Pokémon and PokéStops that the device is currently attempting to interact with.

Players can tap a Pokémon or PokéStop linked to the device to choose whether to attempt the catch or spin the Photo Disc manually. The device menu also provides a summary of Pokémon caught and Photo Discs spun.

The update adds several other gameplay and quality-of-life changes. Capture summaries now use improved graphics to make catch bonuses and rewards clearer. Pokémon summary pages also feature a dedicated Appraisal button, providing faster access to appraisal information.

Pokémon GO is also changing encounters around Power Spots. Visiting a Power Spot or placing a Pokémon there after winning a Max Battle will no longer trigger special wild encounters nearby. Visual updates include revised encounter-ring effects for Pokémon attracted by Lure Modules or found while following a Route, as well as clearer color contrast between spun and unspun PokéStop Photo Discs.

Finally, the effects shown around Pokémon attracted by a Mystery Box or Coin Bag have been updated. Niantic notes that upcoming events may be subject to change and reminds players to remain aware of their surroundings and follow local health authority guidance while playing.
