Top Hat Studios and Skinny Frog have provided an update on Ova Magica, confirming its final release date for Nintendo Switch and announcing a version for Nintendo Switch 2. The game was originally announced for Nintendo Switch in August 2020 and had most recently been planned for July before being delayed.
Ova Magica is set in Clover Town, where players take care of a farm while raising and training creatures known as Blobs. The game combines farming and life-simulation elements with JRPG-style exploration and monster taming.
Blobs hatch from eggs and come in different colors, shapes and types, including Forest, Storm and Magma. Players can feed them, care for them, train them and use them in battles against rival trainers and wild Blobs. They can also help with farm tasks, although their needs must be managed to prevent them from becoming overworked or hungry.
The farming system includes crops, berry bushes, fruit trees, herbs, mushrooms and other items from different dimensions. Harvests can be used to prepare food for Blobs or sold at the local market. Players can also fish, catch bugs, mine ore, craft items and decorate their farm and home.
Relationships are another part of life in Clover Town. By talking to, battling and giving gifts to local characters, players can increase their friendships, unlock events and quests, and potentially develop romantic relationships.
Combat uses an Active Time Battle system in which attacks can affect the action bar and interrupt current actions. Players must decide when to attack or defend and select skills according to elemental advantages.
Exploration takes players through Blob worlds accessed via portals. These dungeons change each time they are entered and contain rare eggs, legendary items and crafting materials, with powerful Blob Emperor bosses guarding some of the rewards. The game also includes a breeding system that allows every Blob to be crossbred to create unique companions.
Ova Magica’s features are rounded out by crafting and a range of activities around Clover Town. Players can discover blueprints, process materials with machines such as furnaces and juicers, and improve their farm, home and productivity.
