The team behind Muramasa: Revenant Blades has shared why the Muramasa series is returning after years away. The original Muramasa: The Demon Blade launched on Wii, while the only previous revisit was Muramasa Rebirth on PlayStation Vita, released more than a decade ago.

In an interview with Denfaminico Gamer, producer Makoto Shiota said Marvelous had long wanted to make Muramasa: The Demon Blade available on current hardware. The company had held discussions with developer Vanillaware for some time, but the project only became possible once the timing worked for both teams. Shiota also credited director Wataru Nakanishi’s strong desire to make the game.

Nakanishi said there had been many requests from fans for the Muramasa series to return. He added that he has a personal connection to the original game, having worked on it early in his career, and expressed his happiness at participating in the new project.

Muramasa: Revenant Blades is scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch on February 4, 2027.
