Macronix is ending production of ROM memory, a component it has supplied for physical Nintendo game cartridges. The company’s latest financial release showed ROM products made up 5% of its revenue in Q3 2026, down 39% year on year, according to analyst David Gibson.
Macronix plans to focus instead on NOR and eMMC memory chips and will stop reporting ROM sales separately in future financial releases. Gibson noted that Nintendo has other partners available to produce cartridges, so Macronix’s departure does not by itself mean physical game production will stop.
The change could, however, contribute to a shift toward digital sales and Game-Key Cards. Digital sales accounted for more than 60% of Nintendo’s total sales in Q4 2026 and Q1 2027, though that share varies with major game releases.
Nintendo’s next financial release is due on 5 November. The company may address the development in its materials or during its usual Q&A session.
